Things you need to know before calling to have your heating oil filled

When you move into a home that uses heating oil to heat the house, it’s important to have the oil tank filled regularly to ensure that you do not run out of fuel. Before you call the company, you need to know the following things to ensure that you are properly prepared.

Determine if You Have a Buried or Exposed Tank

You need to go outside and try to find the tank that holds your heating oil. When the oil technician comes to your home, he or she will need to know if you have an exposed tank or buried tank for filling purposes. You will know if you have an exposed tank because you will be able to see it above the ground. If you know that the home uses oil, but do not see a tank, there should be a gauge on the side of your house that leads down to a buried oil tank.

Determine if the Tank Is Empty or Just Low

If the tank is empty, the technician will have to do tests to make sure that it isn’t leaking before they refill it. If the tank is just low, they can fill it without any hassle. You can look at the gauge to be able to tell the operator at the oil company how much oil the gauge indicates is left in the tank.

Know that the Price You Pay Will Fluctuate

Many people make the mistake of assuming that it will cost the same price to fill their heating oil tank every time they call to have it filled. That’s not the case, though. If the previous owners told you how much it cost them to fill the tank, it’s important to understand that it may not cost you the same amount to fill it. The price can fluctuate based on the number of oil distributors in the area and the current cost of crude oil.

Determine When You Will Be Available

It’s important to be present when the oil is filled for the first time. The technician may need to have you sign paperwork giving them permission to fill your tank or sign a receipt for payment. Ask the operator what forms of payment they accept as well so that you can be ready with the proper document when the technician arrives.

Consider Having the Tank Inspected

When you purchase a new home, it’s a good idea to have the oil tank inspected before you have it filled. This is to ensure that it is in good condition and that there are no leaks that need to be addressed. It will give you peace of mind that the tank is in good condition at the end.

It’s a good idea to call to have your heating oil filled before the temperatures start to drop. You do not want to have to sit in a cold house because you didn't get the oil filled soon enough. During the winter months, oil companies are often very busy. It can take time before you get the oil you need. Getting the tank filled in advance ensures you have time to handle potential issues that may arise and can get the tank filled before you need to start heating your house.
